The President's Message...

Welcome to the 77th Anniversary of the...

Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo
“Celebrating Our Western Heritage”

Dear Fort Bend County Friends & Neighbors:

It is a tremendous privilege and honor to serve you this year as President of the Fort Bend County Fair & Rodeo. Our Fair is truly a treasure with a rich history of serving youth and communities within Fort Bend County. This year we look forward to another fun, educational, and entertaining 10 days.

Last year our Fair drew over 155,000 fairgoers. This marks the 5th consecutive year that we have drawn over 100,000 in attendance. More importantly, through auctions and scholarships Fort Bend County youth received over 1 million dollars. In addition, we had 155 sponsors which gave over $489,000 in cash and in-kind sponsorships. All of this was done in what was a challenging economic year for many of us.

The Fort Bend County Fair is the one event in our county where you can enjoy a livestock show, rodeo, carnival, musical entertainment, and many other activities all in one place. That’s not to mention the many other events such as the special citizens evening, senior citizens day, exceptional kid’s rodeo all of which benefit and serve our communities.

Our Fair offers so much, to so many. Of course this would not happen if not for the many volunteers, sponsors, auction buyers and all of you who in some way or another support the Fair. In addition, our Board of Directors and staff work year round to continue to make our Fair the biggest and best in Texas!

In closing, I want to thank my wife Cheryl and sons Matt and Jacob for their support and patience. I hope that you will join us for this year’s Fair on September 27th – October 6th. Come and help us “Celebrate our Western Heritage” and keep the traditions and values of the Fort Bend County Fair & Rodeo strong for the next 77 years.

2013 FBCFA President

"Go Tejano" Shows Some Love...

The Fort Bend County Go Tejano Committee once again proved they have a big heart for our Fort Bend County kids. The committee hosted a Valentine’s Day Dance featuring David Lee Garza and Los Musicales last month. Crystal N Crew and DJ Mario opened for the Tejano legend. Over 1200 tickets were sold, raising several thousands of dollars for fair scholarships. The committee’s efforts yielded a night of spectacular Tejano music and successful fundraising.  The crowd enjoyed the accordion filled music with the familiar Tejano beat throughout the evening; keeping the dance floor filled.  “The Fort Bend County Tejano Committee appreciates the support it has received from its Board of Directors, community and the children we assist with scholarships,” says Ron Castillo, Go Tejano Committee Chairman.

The Go Tejano committee was established in 2010 and has made great strides in creating lasting partnerships with the community and promoting of Hispanic Heritage. The committee is one of the fasting growing and continues to grow with both members and volunteers. Several fundraisers throughout the year are hosted by the Go Tejano committee and as a committee remain very active and participate in several fair related events such as the parade and the BBQ cook-off. Always a fun day is the Go Tejano day at the fair, where once again the committee’s efforts can be enjoyed by all. Castillo boasts, “I am very proud of each committee member and volunteer that has had a part in making this committee what it is today… success is what comes from hard work”.

The next Go Tejano event is already being planned for July 27th. The committee will be having a dance to help raise money once again for youth scholarships.  If you are interested in joining please contact via email   info@fbcfa.org.

Hats off to Us!

The New Year kicked off on a winning note for the Fort Bend County Fair Association. In January, the 2013 Texas Events Summit was held in San Antonio.  The Fort Bend County Fair & Rodeo received 11 Marketing Awards including 3 first place awards - Best Premium Book, Best Online Advertising and Best Color Newspaper Ad.  The competition was fierce among other fairs/events in the State of Texas that have attendance ranging between 100,000 to 500,000.

A delegation representing the FBCFA  made the trip and proudly accepted the awards.  “It is always nice to be recognized, but it was absolutely overwhelming with all the honors and accolades we received,” says Susan Sillavan, Fort Bend County Fair Association Manager.

The Texas Association of Fairs and Events (TAF&E)  and The Texas Festivals & Events Association (TFEA), combined efforts to produce this first ever joint convention between these industry giants.  Periodically these associations will come together and recognize fairs, festivals and events of all sizes held throughout Texas. Congratulations to all involved for a job well done!

FBISD brings back “Fair Day”

After several years of missing from the official school calendar, Fort Bend ISD approved to once again observe Fort Bend County Fair Day as a holiday on September 27th. Fair Day has been a tradition for some families to be off of school to enjoy and participate in the FBCFA parade and student day activities. Fort Bend ISD develops the school calendar two years in advance to facilitate planning for the community and staff. At its February 25th Regular Board Meeting, the Fort Bend ISD Board approved Calendar A for the 2014-2015 school year, and the Board approved a revision to the 2013-2014 school calendar. One of the revisions was to add in “Fair Day”.

“Peek-a-Boot”

Congratulations to Fort Bend County’s Lamar CISD Rachel Faye Becker. The Foster High School senior took the Reserve Champion honors for her artwork at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Show. Becker’s work, "Peek-a-Boot," a picture of a kitten peering out from inside a cowboy boot will be auction off during the show’s art auction.  Student artists from pre-K through 12th grade submitted original works of art depicting Western culture, history or heritage in the awards competition. Hayloft Gallery in Reliant Center will display all the artworks through the run of the show. Becker said she plans to attend Texas State University and receive a degree in business management and studio art. Bravo to all the students who represented and participated in the Art show.
