Tag In Time
Fair Ready

Goats, Lambs and Pigs filled the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds for the official Tag-In on Saturday, July 13, 2013.  Hats off to all the Livestock committee members and all the volunteers on a smooth and fast paced Tag-In. Approximately 80 Goats and 80 Lambs were tagged on Saturday morning. “We had a big number of Pigs…about 160,” says Bobby Poncik, Livestock Superintendent.

Already the FBCF has held the Turkey delivery and the Steer and HeiferTag-In was back in March. “After today’s Tag-In we have the Roaster and Boilers pick up and the Rabbit tattooing,” states Poncik. “And basically all the animals are ready for the Fair and we’re just waiting for it to be here,” he adds.

Many of the youth livestock exhibitors will be returning but for some it is their first time to show. Davis Coldaway and his lamb “Chubalina” will be showing for the first time at this year’s fair. The Huggins Elementary student is looking forward to getting the experience. Sisters, Elizabeth and Meredith Aaron, are home schooled and will be showing for the first time. “I haven’t named my lamb yet I just got him,” says Meredith.

“For some of the kids it’s their last time to show at the Fair because they’re High School Seniors,” says Poncik. “It’s a good time and great to see these kids…all of them”.  For the schedule of Jr Livestock events visit our web site…  Livestock Info.

Exceptional Rodeo
One Special Time

The Exceptional Rodeo committee debuted at last year’s Fair and is already preparing for this year’s October 4th event. The first time event provided intellectually and physically challenged children and young adults a real like rodeo experience. The “contestants” were partnered with cowboys, cowgirls and volunteers to an arena full of rodeo like events. Horseback riding, a simulated bucking apparatus, barrel racing and pole bending courses were just a few of the altered events set up for the special rodeo.

“We are counting down the days to the Fair,” says Kathy Oujesky. Kathy’s daughter Kristi participated as a contestant in the Exceptional Rodeo. For years the Oujesky’s sons have participated in the Steer and Pig shows. “Because of the Exceptional Rodeo all my kids have participated in the Fair,” says Oujesky. “My daughter didn’t just have to watch her brother she knew this event was for her.”

This year, the committee will grow to host 50 kids and young adults. “It is a very rewarding experience working with these families,” boasts Barbara Magana Robertson, Committee Chairperson. She adds, “Many of our volunteers were just completely taken in by the kids and really made their day special.”
Returning this year will be 4x World Champion
Bull Fighter Rob Smets as announcer, Professional Trick rider Ginger Duke and a few PRCA cowboys who have once again committed their time.

“Oh I had a good time and I love my hat,” exclaims Kristi Oujesky, Exceptional Rodeo contestant. All the contestants received a cowboy hat, stick horse, a memento photo and a championship trophy.

Committee chairperson, Barbara Magana Robertson was recently awarded the Advocacy Award by the Arc of Fort Bend County at their annual award banquet for her continued efforts of working with those with intellectual and related developmental disabilities.  For more information on the Exceptional Rodeo email

Student Spotlight
Surviving A Shark Bite

15-year-old Garrett Sebesta made National news after being bitten by a shark last month while in waist deep water at Surfside Beach. Sebesta is no stranger to our Fair “He has shown here since he was 8,” says Marina Sebesta, Garrett’s Mom. She adds, “He is doing well, ready to get back in the barn!”

Garrett started beating the shark with both hands after being bitten in his lower left leg and then the teen’s left hand. Now, Garrett is recovering at a Pediatric Skilled Nursing facility.  “Things are moving forward,” says Sebesta. Garret still has nights with tremendous pain. A combined Livestock Show and Fundraiser to help with medical cost is set for next month in Needville. “I got Garrett's lamb and goat tagged in for Fort Bend County Fair. Not sure what the future holds but he's entered and has every intention of showing up and showing” says the proud Mom.
