Fred Whitfield... His Way!

Fred Whitfield recently sat down and spoke with the Fort Bend County Fair. Both Whitfield and Cody Ohl  have accepted an invitation to match rope at the 2014 Fort Bend County Fair. The match roping between these two gigantic, multi world champion cowboys is set for Wednesday, October 1, 2014. Eight-time world champion Joe Beaver will be calling the action.

Fred shared his thoughts on the upcoming Challenge of the Champions match roping with Ohl, his recently released autobiography and his plans for retirement.

What Fred has to say…

“Fort Bend County Fair has been good to me over the years. Growing up in Waller, it has been close to home and I have always been able to pick up a check there.  I have been hitting a few summer rodeos, Reno, Cody, Calgary, Livingston; it will be nice to be close to home. Last year at Rosenberg, I was able to bring my oldest daughter with me and it’s nice to be able to do that every now and then. I look forward to coming back and I always enjoy a good match roping, so it should be a good night.

I've had a pretty good run so far this season. I made the finals in Calgary, won in Livingston and I am sitting around 10th in the world.  I've got a good chance to make the Finals again. You know, from my 1st NFR to potentially my 21st NFR, I am always going to be trying to win.

During my career, I can easily say that I have no regrets.  I have never looked back. I don’t want to continue to go to 60, 70 or 85 rodeos a year anymore. I’m past all that, but if I could go to some winter rodeos and win enough to have an outside chance to make the NFR, then I would welcome that idea. As far as leaving home and staying gone for three or four months ... that’s over.

I have been traveling with some younger guys and they keep me young. To come out here and still be competitive with the kids and all the young talent that is out here, it's a big-time positive for me. It would be far-fetched for me to sit here and tell you I'm going to win the world, but if the opportunity presents itself, I'm darned sure not going to back down from it. Next month, I turn 47 years old, and I still feel like I am competitive but most important, I still love the sport. It’s been real good to me.

My book,  ‘Gold Buckles Don’t Lie,’ gives an insight on what my family and I have overcome. There are a lot of trials and tribulations we had to endure. Not too many people knew about my childhood but I wanted to share it and maybe it can serve as an inspiration to someone who may be going through something similar.”

Next month we will hear from Joe Beaver as we continue to spotlight the “Challenge of the Champion” Match roping between Fred Whitfield and Cody Ohl.

Downtown Stomp
Wine & Shop!

Wine lovers and shopping mavens are invited to come out and enjoy the first annual Downtown Stomp.  Shopping after hours, wine tasting and raising money for a good cause is the goal of the Downtown Stomp. The Fort Bend County Fair and their wine committee, Grapes on the Brazos, have partnered with the Rosenberg Cultural District to host the Downtown Stomp in the Historic Downtown Rosenberg shopping area. The evening is set for Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 5pm to 9pm.

A select number of merchants will be open for shopping and hors d’oeuvres. Whether you are looking for some fair fashions, jewelry, furniture, antiques or a little something sweet to eat, you will have your choice of open businesses. Over a dozen merchants have stepped forward to have extended hours and be part of the unofficial kick off for the Fort Bend County Fair. “It is a great way to connect to the community and it also brings awareness to our fair,“ says Fair President Vickie Todd Autrey. “Once again, here’s an opportunity to showcase that our fair is willing to host events year round to help raise monies for Fort Bend County students.” Over $130,000 was awarded this year for scholarships from monies earned from 2013 events.

Featured wines are still being selected. Texas Direct Auto has generously stepped up to be the Champagne Sponsor. Tickets and keepsake wine glasses are now on sale at the fair office or online at www.fortbendcountyfair.com.

Go Tejano
Raising Funds and Fun!

The Fort Bend County Go Tejano Committee is back at what they do best…raising monies for scholarships and having fun.  Latin Grammy nominees, Los DesperadoZ, will be bringing their signature progressive conjunto sounds with a dash of old style on July 26th to the Go Tejano Committee’s 5th Annual Scholarship Dance. Los DesperadoZ originated as a band of brothers who come from rich Tejano roots. The former body builders embraced the accordion sound from the beginning and never waivered from their Tejano orgins.

The Go Tejano committee began in 2010 and has grown to be a powerhouse in scholarship fundraising and one of the fastest growing committees of the Fort Bend County Fair. Three separate dances throughout the year have generated thousands of dollars for scholarships. These monies have helped college bound youth achieve their education goals.

The committee has formed enduring relationships with the community and continues to promote Hispanic Heritage.  As a committee they remain very active and participate in several fair related events such as the parade, the BBQ cook-off and Go Tejano Day at the fair.

The dance begins at 7pm in Building C at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds.  Opening for Los DesperadoZ will be JP y Sueno and DJ Mario.

For tickets call the Fair office at 281-342-6171.

Road to Fair Time...
Tag-In

Believe it or not…we are about two months away from our Fort Bend County Fair. Tag In day for swine, lambs and goats was held earlier this month. There were approximately 150 Swine, 88 Lambs and 86 Goats were tagged in.  “We are excited to see such a good turn out,” says Bobby Poncik, Livestock Superintendent for the Fort Bend County Fair. “You know we will have kids showing for their first time and then we are going to have kids showing for their last time as high school seniors, that is what it is all about. It is about the kids!”

The Fort Bend County Fair sends Good Luck and Best Wishes to all the exhibitors, their livestock projects, FFA teachers, 4H leaders and all the parents!

Eligible candidates who are interested in being named Fort Bend County Fair Queen have until July 27th to register. The competition is based on ticket sales, interview, and style show performance.
