King of the Ring
Livestock Judges Named...

Raising animals is a huge commitment for FFA and 4-H kids. If you are showing at the Fort Bend County Fair, depending on your livestock project, it could be a long, hot summer getting your animal ready for the show ring. The elusive Grand Champion title takes months of preparation, and ultimately comes down to one judge’s opinion. Recently, the Fort Bend County Fair released the names of livestock and showmanship judges who will be bringing their expertise to our fair. “We work hard to get the right person to fill our judging needs,” says Ernest Lawson, Fort Bend County Fair Director. “Someone with experience, but also the commitment to help our kids who want to continue their junior livestock careers. A judge’s brief conversation with a young exhibitor could impact the rest of their lives.”

The livestock and showmanship judges range from 33-years experience in livestock judging to current high school advisors. Among them, they represent Aggies, Bearcats, and the Red Raiders. The 2015 Fort Bend County Steer Show judge is Dr. Chris Skaggs. Dr. Skaggs just completed a 10-day run for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as steer show superintendent where he oversaw approximately 1800 show steers.  Troy Oliver, Lamb Showmanship judge for the 2015 Fort Bend County Fair, was recently named the Sealy Independent School District's Teacher of the Month. In a recent interview, Oliver said, “On any given day a variety of activities are happening in the Ag Building at Sealy High School. Students are participating before, during and after school. Our FFA chapter has a large number of students, but we are always looking for and inviting others to take advantage of the many opportunities we offer.”

It is typical for the livestock judge to take the arena microphone and explain what he is looking for in each class. This year, we look forward to their opinions and decisions. As we get more confirmation from our judges, we will pass along the information. Here is the current list of the commitments for the 2015 Fort Bend County Fair Livestock and Showmanship judges.

Youth Art Month

March is Youth Art Month. The Fort Bend County Fair supports young artists with several art exhibits and our School Art Auction. Each year, the auction has grown in both exhibits and monies raised. The School Art Auction Program is designed to reward the efforts and showcase the artwork of Fort Bend County students in grades 8-12. This competition brings out the creativity in our youth and enables them to earn money for their future. Exhibitors enter their original pieces of art in hopes of winning the coveted Grand Champion ribbon. The top exhibits will be displayed and auctioned off. This year, the auction is set for Saturday, September 26.

Boiling Up Fun
Crawfish Boil

Pots will be boiling up tasty crawfish at the 7th Annual Fort Bend County Fair Crawfish Boil on Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds. While restaurants are having trouble keeping them in stock, we will have plenty of high-quality crawfish and fried fish on the menu. Mudbug connoisseurs are hailing the 2015 Crawfish season as the “best in years.” “We have sold quite a few tickets,” says Susan Sillavan Forbes, Fort Bend County Fair manager. “Getting your crawfish fix and mixing it with good music is what a great Friday night is all about.”

Duane's Country Crawfish, based out of Louisiana, will be providing the pinch-n-eat delights as the fair goes Cajun. There will be a live and silent auction that evening. Proceeds will benefit the Fort Bend County Fair Scholarship program. Don’t plan on eating and leaving, though — Wade Andrew Smith and Driftwood will keep things spicy with their brand of traditional music starting at 8:30 p.m. The 7th Annual Fort Bend County Fair Crawfish Boil is the place to be on Friday, March 27, to bring out your inner Cajun!
